For this task I will be looking in to the characters in our film opening that we are going to include. We are looking to have 4 characters in our film opening, which consists of the main character - Pete, who's wife is being held hostage and he wants to get her back, the criminal/bad guy - Sebastian, who is the one holding her hostage, his guard - who doesn't play a big role in the film but is there to make Sebastian look more power fall, and a dealer - a man with an unknown identity who provides Pete with the package. We will see Pete in most of the shots as he is the main character. We want these characters in our film opening as it will give the narrative more sense as we are providing the audience with a couple of the main characters but not all of them. And we also have a couple characters to help develop the narrative to make it more understandable.
Pete
Pete is an ordinary working man from London who is married, and has a good job working at the Tower of London with security. So overall he has a good lifestyle. However his life is turned around when his wife is kidnapped and by going from having the perfect lifestyle to losing some of it represents the dramatic change in the narrative making it more emotional yet intriguing. This is the sort of appearance we want this character to have:
Sebastian
Sebastian represents the villain in the story as he is the one that causes disruption in the narrative. He is the leader of a criminal gang who want to break into the Tower of London in order to steal the crown jewels and he is using Pete as a way of breaking in. He is blackmailing him by kidnapping his wife which makes the situation a big deal and therefore makes Pete become more obedient towards him. So overall Sebastian is a horrible person who finds it fun to offend and hurt people in order to gain power over them. This is the sort of appearance we want this character to have:
These are the two main characters in our film opening. Obviously there would be more characters introduced throughout the film but we only want to focus on these characters as they are the most important for our film opening. We think that by introducing the main characters of the story in the film opening, it will help the rest of the narrative make sense as it is immediately clear to the audience on who the good guy is and who the bad guy is and why he is bad. Then the rest of the story will go on to show what caused this situation and develop on the characters personal lives. As Pete is the main character he will have the most screen time because we want the audience to be on his side of the story and by getting to know this character better it would give the story more meaning and make it more emotional.
Overall by doing this task it has given us an understanding of who the main characters in our film opening are and what their roles are. We have also looked at how the characters would develop a connection with the audience and how we want the audience to view them, so we need to make sure that these characters come across in the right way, for example as Pete being the good guy and Sebastian and being the bad guy.
