Audience Questionnaire Answers Analysed

For this task, we are going to analyse the answers with above 5 votes to our question on action films from our questionnaire to look into detail of each of them and to get an idea of how we could use them in our film opening.

Question

Answer 1 - Fighting Scenes
For this option, a total of 7 people out of 18 chose it with a share of 38.89%. I believe this many people chose this option because it is very common to see fighting scenes in an action film. However under half of the people chose this option so it may not be necessary for a film opening. I probably would have chosen this option because as far as I am aware, every action film I have watched has had a fighting scene. Deadpool has a lot of fight scenes and includes one in the film opening. I don't it is completely necessary to include, however we want to make our genre obvious in our film opening as it is a mainstream film, and using a fight scene will help show that. We could have a fight scene when a good guy meets a bad guy so that the narrative is made more obvious in which the audience will know who's side they are on.

Answer 2 - A Chase of Some Sort
For this option, a total of 7 people out of 18 chose it with a share of 38.89%. I believe that people chose this option because, like with answer 1, it is very common to see a chase of some sort in an action film. I probably would have chosen this option too, however I believe that fighting scenes are slightly more necessary that a chase. An example of a film with a chase is Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol where there is a sand storm and a good guy is trying to capture a bad guy. I think this option is necessary to include to make our genre of action more obvious to the audience, however it depends on the narrative because I think we should only include a chase if we have a fight scene.

Answer 3 - Explosions
For this option, a total of 6 people out of 18 chose it with a share of 33.33%. I believe that people chose this option because it is a typical action film subject that you will often see in these types of films. Having an explosion can make a film much more dramatic. I probably wouldn't have chosen this option because I don't think it is necessary for an action film to have an explosion, however nowadays a lot of the big action films do. The film Spectre broke a world record for the largest real explosion in a film which helped it to boost its audience. It won't be possible to have an explosion in our film opening as we aren't qualified to carry it out. However we could edit one in but I don't think it will look good as it will be obvious it is fake. Also it only had 1/3 of the votes so most people wouldn't expect to see an explosion. Therefore we are likely not to include this for our piece.

Answer 4 - Big Stunts
For this option, a total of 8 people chose it with a share of 44.44%. I believe that so many people chose this option because big stunts is a common feature for action films. This is what makes an action film an action film because it would involve lots of fast paced movement and 'action'. I definitely would have chosen this option because from what I am aware of, there isn't an action film I have seen without some sort of stunt. To me, its like saying you're watching an action film without any action. Therefore I think it is completely necessary to include some sort of stunts in our film opening. Maybe not big stunts as such, but we will need some small ones to involve more action and therefore to make our film obvious it is an action. An example of a film with a big stunt is in Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation, when Tom Cruise performed a stunt using a plane. Another example is in Spectre, when they performed a record for the biggest explosion in a film. Obviously, we wouldn't be able to perform this but we can include small stunts involved in a chase.

Answer 5 - A hero
For this option, a total of 5 people chose it with a share of 27.78%. This option collected a fair amount of votes compared to the other options in which I believe is because it is common for there to be a hero in an action film as the narrative is generally about good guys fighting bad guys. For example there are a lot of superhero movies that obviously involve a hero and they all fit under the genre category of action. Also films like Mission Impossible, Spectre, and World War Z all contain a hero. I probably would have chosen this option because there are a lot of action films that include a hero, however I don't think it is compulsory that we include one because it depends on the sort of narrative we have.

Answer 6 - Location in a big city
For this option, a total of 5 people chose it with a share of 27.78%. This option also collected a fair amount of votes compared to the other options in which I believe is because you do often see a recognisable location of a city in action films. For example Divergent is set in Chicago, San Andréa's involves locations such as Las Vegas and San Francisco, and Now You See Me 2 has a set in London. I probably would have chosen this option because I believe having your location set in a city makes your film more obvious to be action because its set in a real place, making the audience more drawn to it as they can imagine the place if they have been there. However I don't think it is compulsory that we film in a big city because a lot of action films like The Martian, Jungle Book, Jurassic World and Guardians Of the Galaxy aren't filmed in well-known locations. Yet if we wanted to include this, we could film in London.

Answer 11 - A realistic situation
For this option, a total of 9 people chose it with a share of 50%. This option collected the most votes out of all of them which is quite surprising considering that there are so many action films out there that don't contain a realistic situation. For example films like Jurassic world is about bringing dinosaurs back to existence, films like Godzilla and King Kong are about giant beasts causing disruption, Harry Potter is about wizardry which doesn't exist and there are a lot of superhero movies like the X Men series, Superman, Spiderman, Avengers, etc that can't happen in real life as it is impossible for people to have mutations like these. I wouldn't have chosen this option because I don't believe it is compulsory to include a realistic situation in an action film, however I believe that many people chose it because the action films they had in mind were more realistic. I also think people chose this option because a lot of action films that do contain an unrealistic situation are also categorised as either fantasy or adventure as well. However overall, by looking at this as an individual option, it did only get half the votes, and I think when it comes to the narrative there is an even amount of action films out there that are realistic and unrealistic.

Conclusion
By doing this task we have looked at what is necessary to include in our own film opening compared to how many options people chose and what action films include these options. As there are a lot of options, we didn't think it was necessary to analyse the options with less than five votes as it shows that not many people would expect to see it so we won't consider using it unless we need to. Most of the options that we analysed are possible to include for our film opening so it is useful that we have analysed them and began to think of ways to include them within our piece. Now we need to start putting these ideas together and create a storyline.
